February 2010:  The telenovela is now airing in daily reruns on Telemundo in the United States.  Check your local television listings as times will vary.

A word of caution—

If you are one of the many people who were unable to view the novela on Telemundo or for whatever reason did not have English captions, please be careful before purchasing any sets of DVDs or VHS tapes from any person or website.  You need to make certain that the source for the episodes was Telemundo in the United States and that English captions were transmitted during the broadcast.  There is a set of discs for sale on a site called NOVELAS R US, but the source of the episodes was Spain.  The NOVELAS R US discs do not have English captions!  European television does not use the same caption encryption that we use in the United States, and the captions will not be present on those discs.

So far there is no information about an official DVD release, but there are rumors.  Please consider joining our Telemundo Zorro discussion group so that you can stay informed.  Additionally, you can vote to put the show on DVD at this site.  You have to register before you can vote.

The Zorro television series La espada y la rosa, or The Sword and the Rose, aired for 112 episodes on Telemundo in the United States from Monday, February 12, 2007 through Monday, July 23, 2007.  The television series is a telenovela, which is a Spanish drama.  The series was filmed in Colombia in Spanish, but English subtitles were available on the Closed Captioning, CC1.

122 chapters were filmed but Telemundo aired the 122 chapters as 112 episodes.  20 episodes were combined into 10 episodes that aired in 90 minute time slots, thus reducing the number of aired episodes by 10.  I expect that as the telenovela airs in different countries that it is likely airing as 122 episodes, as originally filmed.

This version of Zorro bends history and places Zorro in a setting that at times is almost like an alternate reality.  The telenovela was filmed in Colombia, and the essence of Colombia and South America is very much a part of every episode.  The setting is supposed to be Los Angeles, California, but it is as though Los Angeles is a part of Colombia, South America.

The novela contains every outrageous plot device that a person could want from slave traders to cannibals, mystical Indians, Amazon warrior women, witches, gypsies, piranhas, pirates, lepers, an exorcist, victims of demon possession, and even a dwarf and a hunchback.  The amazing range of bizarre characters and plot elements combine to create a version of Zorro that is quite unlike any of the previous versions.
